From Ushuaia to Alaska Without Using Planes: “Zero Impact Expedition”
*Translated Newspaper Article from the Argentinian Newspaper “El Diario Nuevo Dia”

David, an environmental scientist and content creator, is leading the “Zero Impact Expedition,” a journey around the world without using airplanes while measuring the environmental impact of every step. In an interview with the program “Rock and Frío” on Radio Nuevo Día, he shared how his journey began in Estonia, took him through Santa Cruz, Argentina, and is now carrying him toward Alaska — blending adventure, science, and ecological awareness.

From Science to Global Action: David’s Sustainable Travel Around the World Without Flying

David is much more than a traveler. He’s an environmental scientist with a PhD in sustainability, a change-driven activist, and a content creator who decided to pursue his dream of traveling the world — but with one unbreakable rule: to do it without using airplanes and with the lowest environmental impact possible.

That’s how the Zero Impact Expedition was born: an initiative that blends adventure, citizen science, and activism, in which David measures and offsets his carbon footprint throughout the entire journey.

How a Life-Changing Accident Sparked a Sustainable Journey From Antarctica to Alaska

The interview with Javier Seveso on his program “Rock and Frío” on Radio Nuevo Día — recorded while David was crossing Argentina’s northern border on his way to Bolivia — revealed an inspiring story. “I’ve always been interested in how to take better care of the planet,” he shared, explaining that the idea for the expedition was born after a serious bicycle accident that made him reevaluate his life. “I asked myself what I would like to have done before dying, and one of the answers was to travel the world in an adventurous, and sustainable way.”

How David Calculates His Carbon Footprint While Traveling the Americas Without Flying

To calculate his carbon footprint, David developed his own digital tool where he records every mode of transportation he uses—whether hitchhiking, cycling, kayaking, or sailing—and even the types of food he consumes. “My goal is to offset all the CO₂ emitted and reach a final net-zero impact,” he explained, adding that this compensation can be done through financial contributions to reforestation projects or, as he plans to do, by acquiring land to reforest it himself.

During his time in Argentina, David traveled much of the country by hitchhiking, including the famous “Route 3” and “Route 40”, and spent time in Patagonia. “In El Calafate and El Chaltén I did a lot of hiking, and I was amazed. The immensity of the Patagonian landscape makes you feel very small,” he recalled. He also described difficult moments such as thefts, long waits on the road, and uncertain nights—but always with a resilient outlook: “Every obstacle brings learning, even the bad days.”

Beyond the main expedition, David leads other projects such as Mindful Mountain Adventure, where he organizes mindful hikes in nature, and Run for Planet, a series of charity runs whose funds support organizations that protect the environment and rescue animals. “If I manage to inspire even one person to rethink their relationship with the planet, I’m already satisfied,” he said.

He is currently continuing his journey north with the goal of reaching home (Germany) in approximately three years. Although he doesn’t yet know what the future holds once the expedition ends, he is certain that his life will remain connected to sustainability and to raising environmental awareness through meaningful action.
