While there are hundreds of beautiful beaches and lagoons in Mexico, this list gives you a quick overview of my TOP FIVE Beaches for an Unforgettable Adventure, which I visited not once but several times alone, with friends and family. I stayed overnight in a tent in some of them (I have noted it below).

    1. Playa Balandra, La Paz
    2. Boca de Iguanas, Jalisco
    3. Playa Escondida (Love Beach), Islas Marietas
    4. Akumal Beach, Quintana Roo
    5. Punta Allen, Quintana Roo

1. Playa Balandra, La Paz

Playa Balandra, a gem near La Paz, is a true paradise for nature lovers and camping enthusiasts. This pristine bay, surrounded by two inlets with crystal-clear water, is the ideal place to enjoy the beauty of nature away from civilization. You can take long walks in shallow waters and admire the breathtaking starry sky at night. Although the beach is popular during the day, especially on weekends, staying overnight in a tent on the beach offers the chance to experience the quieter and more magical side of Balandra. Here, one can experience nature in its purest form and fully enjoy the extraordinary beauty of the bay.

Getting There

  • By Road: Located near La Paz, you can take a local bus (my preference) or taxi, but be prepared for limited availability for the return trip!
  • By Boat: Boat tours from Tecolote Beach offer an alternative route, especially during Balandra’s restricted hours

Highlights

  • Stunning crystal-clear waters, ideal for kayaking and swimming.
  • Famous for the Mushroom Rock (El Hongo) that can be visited by wading through shallow waters.
  • Hike to a panoramic viewpoint for breathtaking views.
  • Be mindful of the eco-rules to preserve this natural area

2. Boca de Iguanas, Jalisco

For surfing beginners and families, Boca de Iguanas in Jalisco, with its gentle waves and long-stretched beach, offers the perfect vacation destination. Located near the city of Guadalajara (where I lived for many years – see Blogpost), this beach is authentically Mexican and mainly attracts local visitors. In addition to surfing, guests can relax in the freshwater pool or enjoy local specialties from beach vendors. The beach also hosts occasional festivals. Behind the beach, a jungle begins, sometimes dotted with ruins, making the hinterland a fascinating place for exploration. Places like La Manzanilla are also worth visiting and offer additional activities such as surfing and excellent restaurants. You can also spot crocodiles in the nearby river and see many Iguanas wandering around, which is pretty cool.

Getting There

  • By Road: Accessible via a paved road off coastal highway 200, about 19 miles northwest of Barra de Navidad

Accommodations: Options include beach hotels, campgrounds, and hostels

Highlights

  • Ideal for families with gentle waves and a wide beach.
  • Offers good surfing waves for beginners.
  • Freshwater lagoon and diverse wildlife, including occasional crocodiles.

3. Playa Escondida (Love Beach), Islas Marietas

Playa Escondida, also known as Love Beach, is a secret beach formed by a military explosion and accessible only by swimming through a 75-meter-long canal at low tide. However, this unique natural wonder has faced over-visitation and environmental damage, leading to a restriction in the number of visitors. It is recommended to book tours early and monitor the weather, as swimming to the beach is not always possible. Despite these challenges, Playa Escondida remains a breathtaking natural phenomenon worth visiting.

Getting There

  • Park at Seven Seas Beach and take a 30-minute hike through the forest to reach Playa Escondida

Highlights

  • Noted for its tranquility and natural beauty.
  • Not recommended for swimming due to strong currents.
  • Offers stunning views and a peaceful environment for a walk.

4. Akumal Beach, Quintana Roo

Akumal Beach is famous for its beauty, clear, warm water, and proximity to impressive coral reefs. This public beach offers the opportunity to explore the rich underwater world for free without going scuba diving, just by snorkeling. You can spot turtles, tropical fish, and even barracudas.

Getting There

  • Located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, easily accessible by rental car, taxi, or colectivo (shared van)

Highlights

  • Known as the Place of the Turtles, ideal for snorkeling with sea turtles.
  • Clear and calm waters, perfect for swimming and spotting marine life.
  • Be sure to follow guidelines to protect the turtles and the ecosystem

5. Punta Allen, Quintana Roo

Punta Allen, located in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, is a remote beach accessible only via an unpaved road or a long hike. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers pristine nature and the opportunity to observe diverse wildlife. Visitors can camp and enjoy the tranquility of one of Mexico’s best-protected areas. Punta Allen is a paradise for adventurers wishing to experience Mexico’s untouched beauty.

These five beaches offer unique experiences, from peaceful nights under the stars to exciting adventures in untouched nature. Each beach has its own charm and promises unforgettable memories. Mexico is waiting to be discovered with all its natural treasures!

Getting There

  • By Road: A challenging but scenic drive from Tulum through the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended due to the rough and unpaved road

By Tour: Guided tours offer a hassle-free way to explore Punta Allen and the surrounding natural beauty

Highlights

  • Offers a rich biodiversity, including dolphins, turtles, and numerous bird species.
  • Known for activities like bird-watching, snorkeling, and fishing.
  • Limited electricity and cellphone signal, providing a true escape from the hustle of modern life

Each beach offers a unique experience, from the serene waters of Playa Balandra to the adventurous roads leading to Punta Allen. Whether you’re looking for a tranquil retreat or an adventurous escapade, these beaches are sure to provide unforgettable experiences. Just be sure to respect the local ecosystems and enjoy the natural beauty responsibly.
